Black Sable German Shepherds are known for their exotic coats, characterized by light roots with black tips, giving the dog an appearance that closely resembles that of a wolf. The founding breeders considered this appearance the ideal description of a GSD. This flagship coloring is recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) along with 11 additional color variations ranging from black and tan to black and red, black and cream, and gray.

Female Sable German Shepherds can grow up to 24 inches tall and weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. Males can reach a height of up to 26 inches and weigh between 75 and 95 pounds.
