Long Haired German Shepherd Puppies

Types of German Shepherd Puppies

GSDs are known and loved worldwide for their beauty and affable personalities. They’re extremely versatile dogs that can serve any number of purposes, ranging from family pets to disability-assistance dogs to police dogs. If your heart is set on getting a German Shepherd pup, you certainly have many types to choose from based on their physical attributes.

Types of German Shepherds

Black and Tan (Saddle Coat) German Shepherds

The Saddle Coat German Shepherd is perhaps the most widely recognized GSD in the world. This dog is easily distinguished by its tan legs and underbelly, a black “masked” face, and black fur shaped like a saddle on its neck and back.

Black and Red German Shepherds

Black and red German Shepherds are similar to their black and tan counterparts, only the tan part is replaced with reddish or strawberry blonde fur that comes from the color gene pheomelanin. Black and red long haired German Shepherd puppies are particularly beautiful as their luxurious coats shimmer in the sun.

Black German Shepherd

Black German Shepherds are rarer than other variations, but equally as beautiful. They’re solid black in color and sometimes called “Solid Color GSDs.” White German Shepherds fall under this category as well, only their fur is solid white.

Sable German Shepherd

Sable GSDs may come in diverse colors (gray, tan, silver, and red), but they all have one thing in common – each hair has a black tip which is the trademark of a sable pup. This color pattern is sometimes called agouti and can be found throughout the dog’s body. Sable puppies change colors frequently during the first 3 years of their lives, before finally settling into a specific color or coat pattern. Sable GSDs come in short and long-haired varieties, making them extremely unique-looking dogs.
